WWII 121st Engineer Combat Battalion Guidon, a Unit Which Landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day

The wool blend guidon is multi piece construction, double sided with a mirror image reverse, and it is approximately 20 inches by 28 inches. The sleeve on the hoist edge contains a leather tab on each end for attachment to the pole, with the ends of those tabs being torn. There are two very small and barely perceptible holes in the red field, but otherwise the guidon is in excellent condition. On 6 June 1944, the 121st Engineer Combat Battalion landed on Omaha beach in Normandy with the first waves of American forces. The unit suffered signoificant damage to its equipment as well as casualties among its men, but after some recovery it continued to assist in the invasion. For its action during the invasion the 121st Engineer Battalion was awarded the French Croix de Guerre.
